Hard Keepers and Seniors

There are a number of factors that can make a horse a “hard keeper.” In some cases, the horse is elderly and doesn’t have the chewing capacity it once did. Even with dental work, it can sometimes be difficult for these horses to properly masticate their food so that it can be digested and utilized optimally. In other instances, a horse may have higher caloric needs that are not being met or may have a metabolic disease. In yet other instances a horse can develop ulcers and not show any classic signs or symptoms. They may, however, not be able to digest their feedstuffs or may have less appetite.

Injuries and illnesses can also cause a once-thriving horse to become a “hard keeper”. Pain and immobility have a major impact on gut motility and can increase a horse’s chances of developing ulcers or other gastric issues.

Regardless of the reasons, the first line of defense against emaciation is for a horse to receive adequate nutrition. By fostering the gut flora and promoting a balanced pH, the gut lining will heal and be capable of absorbing more nutrients and allowing the horse to gain weight.

Performance Horses & Trailering

Performance horses have a special set of needs that set them apart from other horses. Not only do they have greater physical demands being placed on them but they are also exposed to a large number of stressors, including physical, environmental, and mental.

Stress can cause pH fluctuations in the gut of a horse as more acid is produced and pushed up into the first portion of the stomach. Repeatedly exposing the stomach lining to this high level of acidity can, over time, cause ulcers. Compounded with intermittent or chronic dehydration in horses that have an aversion to new water sources, this can create a long-term issue. In general, it creates discomfort that can result in a loss of focus and performance. Neutralizing stomach acid before any potentially stressful event (hauling, performing, practice) can keep ulcers at bay and guard against the loss of beneficial gut flora.

Zesterra has become a vital part of my management protocol that I didn’t even know I needed. I manage and train out of an active facility that has horses with various needs and schedules. When my area representative for Zesterra first approached me about trying the product, I was, admittedly, skeptical. This product sounded too good to be true, but since I trust Brian’s opinions on products, I gave it a go.

My first experience with Zesterra was giving it to one of the mares on my show string right before a massage and magnawave treatment. This mare holds most of her tension in her flank and stifle area, but wouldn’t allow an effective massage in that area. We gave her a dose of Zesterra before beginning the massage and as our masseuse worked her way towards the problem areas, the mare was much more relaxed and actually allowed her to manipulate the stifle area as needed.

Since that first experience, I’ve seen Zesterra help relieve colic symptoms, help breathing/allergy issues, and increasing water in-take. By far, however, I have noticed the biggest change with regular use in my show string. The horses are all so focused in their work and, in general, the barns have become a much quieter environment, and the whole facility feels like it’s taken a breath out.
